Royal ThaiAddress: 2209 W. Montrose Ave.
Royal Thai is one of the few Thai places in the city that is open on Monday. How cool is that? Besides that unique feature, the restaurant boasts a bevy of basic Thai dishes, all of them excellent – Pad Thai, Pad See Ew, (etc.) – plus lunch specials that come with soup and an appetizer. They also deliver. What more could you ask for? Well, I could use 20 bucks, but…
Everything I have eaten at Royal Thai has been delicious. My fave is the Pad See Ew, similar to Lad Nar, which features wide noodles with broccoli, meat (I prefer chicken), and egg in a mild brown sauce. There are plenty of spicy items on the menu, and you can also have things made spicy by request. Most items can be made vegetarian by substituting a meat choice for tofu. One of my favorite things on the menu is the mango sticky rice. My wife and I order it on every visit, and it’s an awesome dessert: sticky, sweet, clumpy rice served with slices of fresh mango. I declare it “Monte-licious!”
The place itself is small, cute, and has a great staff of cuties, most of whom have worked there for over eight years. And it?s next to a great Mexican spot (Taqueria El Asadero), and a decent bar (Bowmans), so if you’re up for something more, before or after, you have options.
Enjoy some Thai at Royal Thai – where you’re always treated like royalty! They even give you a crown to wear and let you sit you sit on a golden throne. Just kidding. But the service is great, and the food comes out quickly, so I can’t help but feel like a king!
