If you’re looking for some weekend activities and don’t want to venture far from home, RVJ has some recommendations for you. Read on to find out what’s happening this weekend in Roscoe Village and West Lakeview.
For a taste of theater (and more libations), head to Fizz (3220 N. Lincoln Ave.) for Bye Bye Liver aka “The Chicago Drinking Play.” This series of outrageous sketches is performed by The Pub Theater Company every Friday and Saturday. Get tickets here.
Hop in the DeLorean and drive over to Southport. At midnight tonight and tomorrow, the Music Box is screening the 1985 classic Back to the Future. For a different kind of cinematic adventure catch a film or two (or five) in The Cremaster Cycle (also being shown at The Music Box, through Sept. 9). To some, these five feature-length films by artist/filmmaker Matthew Barney are examples of stunning cinematic genius; to others, they’re a total snoozefest. (You decide!)
If you’re more in the mood for a play, check out Under America, a drama that explores gentrification, public housing, and the prison industry. Performed by Mortar Theatre Company at The Athanaeum (2936 N. Southport), this is the play’s world premiere, and it runs through Sept. 26.
For something a little lighter, try The Comedy Showcase on Saturday, Sept. 4, at Chemically Imbalanced Theater (1420 N. Irving Park). Each week features three different improv/sketch groups, and this week’s lineup includes the groups Seriously Unprepared, Counter Productive Lover, and 21st Century Men. The show starts at 10:30 p.m., and you can purchase tickets here.
As previously reported, Southport Grocery recently held a cupcake contest. The winner was selected, and the cupcake will be featured at the cafe for the month of September. The winning concept (created by entrant Stacy L.) is Salty Caramel Chocolate Cupcake, a dark chocolate cupcake with pretzels, salty caramel topping, buttercream frosting, and a dusting of fresh toffee chips and Himalayan sea salt. YUM!
Feeling crafty? The Paper Source on Southport opened today (3543 N. Southport Ave., to be exact). Stop by and check out their paper goods and craft supplies, and be sure to stay tuned to RVJ for more info. on the opening.
