Sad to admit, RVJ readers, but summer is dwindling down. All the more reason to make this weekend count! Here are some suggestions:
This weekend at The Music Box (3733 N. Southport Ave.), check out Jean Michel-Basquiat: The Radiant Child, a documentary about the legendary young artist. It opens tonight, Aug. 27. Also opening tonight is Lebanon, a film about the First Lebanon War as interpreted through the experience of four soldiers in a lone tank dispatched to a hostile town.
Check out Sarah Hadley’s works in Everything Matters, an exhibition at the Chicago Photography Center (3301 N. Lincoln Avenue). Hadley’s domestic portraits explore the meaning of home and comfort. The show ends on Sept. 3.
Tomorrow, Aug. 28, Toons Bar & Grill (3857 N. Southport) is going whole hog and hosting Porkapalooza, which features “brews, blues, and BBQ.” Toons is roasting a whole pig, as well as smoking hot links, rib tips, and Texas sausage. It’s $20 all-you-can-eat, and the first drink (sponsored by Lagunitas Brewing) is free. The event starts at 4 p.m. and a live blues band starts around 6 p.m.
If you’re in the mood for other tunes, head to Schubas (3159 N. Southport Ave.) for a variety of shows this weekend. Tonight, check out Brent Puls (record release), supported by The Glory Singers and Death Ships.
Groupon is currently offering a deal at Gyood (2048 W. Belmont), the local biz that serves lactose-free soft serve, shakes, floats, and other frozen treats. For a mere $4 you can get $10 worth of icy desserts. The deal expires in two days.
