Looking for something to do in the neighborhood this weekend? Roscoe View Journal has a few suggestions:
What’s that noise coming from under the viaduct? The Neon Marshmallow Festival kicked off yesterday at the Viaduct Theater (3111 N. Western). It’s a brand new four-day fest featuring more than 90 experimental and noise bands. Co-curated by Chicagoans Dan Smith (Neon Blossom Records) and Matt Kimmel (Acid Marshmallow), Neon Marshmallow continues through Sunday, August 22.
Tonight at Schubas (3159 N. Southport), hear the country-inflected tunes of Canadian band The Sadies. Prichard opens, along with local favorites Jon Langford and Sally Timms. The show starts at 10 p.m. Tomorrow afternoon at Schubas, School of Rock Evanston presents a family-friendly show called Americana. (Saturday at 2 p.m.)
And for the not so family-friendly… Tonight and tomorrow at 10:30 p.m., the Superstars of Burlesque take over the stage at The Music Box Theatre (3733 N. Southport). Various burlesque acts, including Michelle L’amour, the Chicago Starlets, and Hot Toddy, will flaunt their stuff. It’s quite the lineup: All of the acts hold a world title from the Burlesque Hall of Fame. (Who knew their was a Burlesque Hall of Fame?! Not us.)
Got a great cupcake concept? Win a dozen free desserts from Southport Grocery & Cafe (3552 N. Southport) by submitting your delicious idea to firstname.lastname@example.org (or send via Facebook or Twitter). The winning concept will be developed into a recipe and sold at the cafe through the entire month of September. The deadline is Tuesday, August 24.
