Wal-Mart executives will present plans for an East Lakeview store at a meeting of the Southeast Lakeview Neighbors tonight at 7 p.m. at Wellington Church, 615 W. Wellington.
Wal-Mart’s plans have been unclear since it was first rumored they were planning to move into the 30,000-square-foot Broadway/Surf complex at 2840 N. Broadway in December.
Sources close to the deal told Crain’s in December that Wal-Mart had signed a letter of intent to lease a store in the Broadway at Surf complex. But at the time, Alderman Tom Tunney (44th) said a Wal-Mart executive told him there was no such agreement.
Recently, Wal-Mart representatives have met with the 44th Ward Community Development Council and the Lakeview East Chamber of Commerce.
The Lakeview East Chamber has voiced its opposition to the plan, citing a Loyola University impact assessment. Local officials are considering downzoning the proposed site, limiting development to 25,000 square feet.
The presentation is at a regular meeting of the Southeast Lakeview Neighbors and is open to the public. Ald. Tunney’s office confirms he will attend.
