Tonight Chicago Police Commissioner Garry McCarthy will, “address residents about the possible closure and consolidation of the 19th Police District,” according to flyers distributed by local aldermen.  The five aldermen representing wards covered by the 19th District have announced they’ll be there too: Ald. Joe Moreno (1st), Ald. Scott Waguespack (32nd), Ald. Michele Smith (43rd), Ald. Tom Tunney (44th) and Ald. Ameya Pawar (47th).

The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. tonight in the Lakeview High School Auditorium, 4015 N. Ashland Ave.

In related news, the Chicago City Council seems guaranteed to pass the 2012 City budget tomorrow, taking heat off Comm. McCarthy and making the merger of the 19th and 23rd police Districts a certainty.

Under these circumstances, local aldermen have less leverage over the police to make further changes so tonight’s meeting will be less of a chance for community members to demand changes to planned changes and more of an opportunity to learn what the police have in store for our community.

For those attending tonight’s meeting, there’s a number of important questions still to be answered:

  • Can Comm. McCarthy guarantee the old 19th District area will receive the same proportional amount of officers as before?
  • Will the new beat map be drawn before or after ward redistricting?
  • Will the old 19th District area retain its own community policing liaisons?
  • Will CPD continue to gather separate 19th District statistics for performance measurement?
  • What will happen to the 19th District burglary task force?

Center Square Journal will be at the meeting tonight and will report on the results. Tell us in the comments your chief concerns.
