The last First Time event was this past January at Schubas to celebrate CHIRP’s one year anniversary. The event’s theme was First Cars and it was a big success with music critic Jim DeRogatis, Susan Messing from the Annoyance Theater, Matt Spiegel from Tributosaurus, and many others performing short pieces about their first cars interspersed with covers by the CHIRP house band, which includes Steve Frisbie, Liam Davis, and Gerald Dowd. The very first First Time was last April at Uncommon Ground.
The CHIRP house band is back. This event, hosted by CHIRP radio personality Jocelyn Geboy, is themed First Concert, and includes Matt Priest of Canasta; The Onion’s Nathan Rabin; musicians Dan Phillips, Gerald Dowd, and Dag Juhlin; and writers/bloggers Leah Jones and Amy Hayden.
So far the First Time series is being held in places in the West Lakeview/Roscoe Village area because we have what Jocelyn Geboy wants: “the Vic, Schuba’s, The Beat Kitchen … I love seeing live music in small venues opposed to big ones. I hope we can make Beat Kitchen a permanent home for the reading series.”
Tickets are $10 and you can purchase them by clicking here. Also, Jocelyn needs help: “If people are interested in the series — want to film it for us, write for us, want to get involved in CHIRP in some way, they can get me at firstname.lastname@example.org or check out the station at www.chirpradio.org. We’re also doing a pledge drive right now. We’re an all volunteer-run, listener-supported station and people can go here to see how they can help us out financially. Any amount helps. There are some nice gifts there, too.”
So, purchase tickets now and be at Beat Kitchen on May 18 for the next First Time.
