Maurice “El Oso” Nores, 31, dominated a field of nine amateur competitive eaters before a crowd of seventy-five at Black Rock Bar & Grill, 3614 N. Damen Ave., earlier this evening by eating 33 ribs in the time alloted.

El Oso, Spanish for “The Bear”, bested two tying second-place finishers, Tony Foley, 40, and Brendan Shultz, 19, who each ate 21 ribs. As victor, Oso Nores obtains the right to compete in tomorrow’s professional, Ribmania rib eating contest at the Ribfest North Stage at 6:00 p.m.

Tonight’s contest, a kind of opening for this weekend’s Ribfest, was officially sponsored by Major League Eating and the International Federation of Competitive Eating and was judged by Chicago professional competitive eaters Tim “Gravy” Brown and Benjamin “Wolf” Taylor.
