WBEZ-FM Radio reported statistics this week from the Illinois Department of Health that shows Swedish Covenant Hospital, 5145 N. California Ave., to be the state leader in promoting breast-feeding with new mothers.

According to results compiled from birth certificate data, 97.84 percent of newborns leaving Swedish Covenant Hospital are breastfeeding, as opposed to drinking formula.

“Breastfeeding provides important nutrients and antibodies that protect babies from illness, and it is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics,” says Angela Fornelli, spokeswoman for Swedish Covenant Hospital.

Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, 836 W. Wellington Ave., reported 74.86 percent of newborns breast-feeding when they leave the hospital.
