St. Matthias Catholic Church kicks off a year-long celebration of its 125th anniversary with a gala event on Feb. 25.
Located at 2310 W. Ainslie St., St. Matthias Parish and School was founded in 1887. The current pastor is Rev. John Sanaghan and the principal is Mrs. Sandria Morten.
Parishioners, alumni, parents, partners, civic leaders and friends of St. Matthias Parish are invited to the 125th Anniversary Gala dinner-dance taking place at Misericordia, 6300 N. Ridge Ave., Feb. 25, 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $100 per person and can be purchased online or by phone at 773-506-2191. The marquee event is kicking off a series of commemorative activities to celebrate the anniversary of the parish and school. Funds raised will help support the church restoration and school, which is currently experiencing unprecedented enrollment growth in the city.
Other celebration activities planned throughout 2012 include a formal dedication of the Keehan Garden, named in honor of former pastor Terry Keehan; a summer family picnic; and a special Mass in December with Cardinal Francis George. Another part of the yearlong anniversary celebration is an oral history of the parish, which schoolchildren are undertaking. St. Matthias is searching for long-time parishioners willing to share their stories of St. Matthias and memories of the Lincoln Square area with students.
