Think you’ve got an award-winning stout brewing in your basement? Time to put your skills to the test in the Square Kegs Home Brew Club’s first Winter Brewing Competition.

The contest is sure to be the hot topic at the club’s meeting, Thursday, Dec. 1, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., at Brew Camp, 2039 W. Belle Plaine. Brewers of all levels, including newcomers to the club, are welcome to attend.

Registration for the competition is open Dec. 5 through January 15, 2012. Rules and guidelines have been posted online; to hit a few highlights:

* Competitors must be 21 years of age or older.

* All entries must be handcrafted from ingredients available to the general public.

* Fees are $7 for the first entry, $5 for additional entries.

* Styles follow categories approved by the Beer Judge Certification Program. The contest will accept nearly 100 styles including Dunkelweizen, Braggot, Gueuze and Cyser. Heck, we might brew a Braggot ourselves, because seriously, if we’re not the only (and winning) entrant, color us shocked.

Winners will be announced Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, at Lincoln Square’s first annual Winter Brew, to be held at Dank Haus, 4740 N. Western. This showcase for local breweries will also feature food from The Grafton and Fountainhead specifically designed to pair with various beers. Check the Lincoln Square Chamber of Commerce website for coming information on ticket sales and participating breweries.

And start brewing.
