Welcome back local produce, we missed you.

Although Chicago’s farmers markets officially opened for business a few weeks ago, Southport’s produce extravaganza is just getting under way this Saturday, June 23, 8 a.m. – 2 p.m., at Blaine Elementary, 1420 W. Grace. The market will run weekly through September 8.

The Lakeview Chamber of Commerce had hoped to open the Low Line Market at the Southport Brown Line station this summer as well, but was stymied by railroad legislation (and the “L” is a railroad) written in the late 1800s that clearly did not anticipate people wanting to purchase eggplant while standing under train tracks. Words like “risk management” slowed the approval process to a crawl, though Heather Way, the Chamber’s executive director, remains upbeat about the prospects of holding a couple of fall markets, featuring items like apple cider and pumpkin pie, just to get people accustomed to the location.

“It’ll be much smoother sailing next year,” says Way. “We hope to have a full-blown market next year.”

We’ve also rounded up the list below of markets in nearby neighborhoods. The complete schedule of Chicago’s markets is available here; the Local Beet provides a comprehensive guide including suburban markets; and we also found this handy seasonality chart that tells you when some of your favorite fruits and veggies will be ripe for the picking.
