Some Elem Schools Provide LSC Results – But Not All – UPDATE

By Mike Fourcher | Thursday, April 19, 2012

Update 4/20 2:30p – After we called the CPS central office, many schools began to provide us with election results. Those results have been added below.

A day after Local School Council elections, not every area elementary school was willing or able to provide election results over the phone. Depending on the school, staff had different procedures for providing results to the public, ranging from simply reading them over the phone to leaving a message for the principal.

Calls by Center Square Journal to area schools Thursday afternoon were able to obtain LSC election winners and vote totals from Budlong, Chappell, Coonley, Ravenswood, Blaine, Hamilton and Jahn Elementary Schools. Bell, Burley and McPherson schools said their principal or assistant principal would call back with results. (Bell had already posted winners without vote totals on its website.) Audubon elementary said only the school clerk could provide results, and she was gone for the day. Waters elementary school’s main office did not answer their phone after 3:30 p.m.

Chicago Public Schools’ communication office had unclear information about election result availability as well. Earlier in the day a spokesperson told Center Square Journal that the central office did not have election results and would not have it until next week. But when CSJ called neighborhood schools, many school clerks said they had entered LSC election results in the system’s main database this morning.

Some of the confusion may stem from the fact that the enacting law for Local School Councils merely says “The Council shall certify the results of the election and shall publish the results in the minutes of the Council,” with no other directions as to how they must be provided to the public or parents.

Here are the winners and the vote totals of Parent and Community Representative contests we were able to obtain by 5:00 p.m., Thursday afternoon. Voters were allowed to choose five candidates among all parent and community representatives running. For each school the top six parent and top two community vote getter were elected. In the case of a tie, sitting Local School Councils will determine the winner of tie.
