Looking to add some more small business flavor to the area, Joey McCusty is soon launching his own venture, Joey’s Soda and Snacks, 1946 W. Montrose Ave.
The convenient store, set to open on Nov. 2, will work to quench the thirst of soda aficionados and those looking to treat their palate to carbonated confections from manufacturers both local and national.
McCusty, who boasts years of food service experience, said he has planned this shop for a while, but was just waiting for the right location. Of the handful of places to get soda in the city, the nearest soda shop to McCusty’s is in Edgewater.
“It’s something I’ve been wanting to do,” McCusty said. “I’ve been looking to do this for a long time and it was just a combination of that and finding a place I really thought would work.”
McCusty sees his shop as one that can cultivate a lasting identity in the area, one of a shop that’s easy to get to and that can provide harder to find products.
The shop will feature brands such as Minneapolis-based Joia All-Natural Soda and a root beer from Chicago’s own Goose Island Brewery Co. McCusty’s food offerings will feature some classic snacks alongside specialty items.
“I’m really trying to have popular items you’d see in any convenient store, but [also] things like Poppy Sticks, Hello Panda from Japan and spicy Mexican candies,” McCusty said.
Currently, McCusty is the shop’s only employee, but he relishes the chance to work at his own business.
“I’ll be happy to be here every day working for myself, I just want to [have] a place where people feel like they can come often and be treated with kindness, to be a normal stop for people.”
