Do you go out to dinner? Get your hair cut? Buy clothes? Drink beer? Have your eyes examined? Do it all in Lakeview and earn money for spending money.
As the holidays approach, a stubbornly crappy economy looms over retailers like a lump of coal. To encourage people to keep more of their dollars in the neighborhood, the Lakeview Chamber of Commerce has devised a rewards program that promotes a shop local mindset.
The Shop Lakeview program kicks off Nov. 1 and runs through Dec. 31, 2011. Here’s how it works: Rack up $300 in purchases during the aforementioned time period, at a minimum of five participating businesses (so, no, a cupcake a day at Sensational Bites doesn’t count, though we applaud the idea), and deliver or mail your receipts to the Lakeview Chamber. You’ll get 50 bucks back in Shop Lakeview Dollars, which is kind of like Monopoly money, only it actually spends. Individual households can earn up to $500 in Shop Lakeview Dollars in a single calendar year.
More than just a feel-good mantra, shopping local has been shown to have a number of economic benefits to a community. If, on top of that, it pays you back, well, tis better to receive than to give, yes?
