On Sunday, April 29, two feet trumped four wheels, and even God. For Fleet Feet’s 16th Annual Ravenswood 5k, streets were closed from Hermitage to Paulina and Irving Park to Leland; All Saints Episcopal Church, 4550 N. Hermitage, located at the start/finish line, canceled 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. services. Hard to communicate with the Lord when Queen’s “We Will Rock You” is thumping through the speakers outside.
More than 2,700 runners took part in the race to the cheers of early-rising neighborhood residents. Volunteers lined the course, using whistles to warn participants of upcoming hazards like speed bumps. Finishers were greeted with Gatorade, bananas and massages, which, frankly, seemed like overkill for the winners, who barely broke a sweat in their 15-minute dash.
The top male, Todd Ptacek, completed the 3.1-mile distance in 14:58; top female Heather Prekop recorded a time of 17:41.
Proceeds from the race benefit the Ravenswood Community Services food pantry at All Saints and the student health centers at Lake View and Amundsen High Schools. At publication, Fleet Feet had yet to return CSJ‘s calls regarding the amount of money raised.
