A number of neighborhood leaders confirm that Ald. Scott Waguespack (32nd) has distributed an email warning that the City Council Rules Committee plans to create a new ward that runs between Addison St. and Diversey Ave, with undetermined east and west boundaries that would at least span between Hamlin Park and West Lakeview. The rumored new ward would move the 32nd Ward south of Diversey Ave.
The rumored new new ward boundaries would move the 20th Ward, currently represented by Ald. Willie Cochran, from Lawndale and Englewood, to the North Side. Cochran, who beat rapper Che ‘Rhymefest’ Smith for reelection last spring, has a ward that is likely to turn majority Latino or be completely eliminated as part of the remap.
Reached this afternoon, 32nd Ward Democratic Committeeman John Fritchey did not think the rumored remap was a done deal. ”Based on discussions I’ve had with people with knowledge of the negotiations, as of last night, whether or not the 20th Ward will find itself up on the north side is still up on the air,” said Fritchey.
The rumored new 20th Ward would not impact the 32nd Ward Democratic Committeeman’s race already underway. Both Incumbent Committeeman John Fritchey and Waguespack live south of Diversey.
Ald. Waguespack did not respond to requests for comment by publication.
