Though it goes against my nature to encourage more people to take public transportation, as I do so enjoy Brown Line trains where all the single seats are available, in the spirit of National Dump the Pump Day, let’s all ditch our cars this Thursday, June 16.
Sponsored by the Sierra Club and the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Sixth Annual Dump the Pump Day aims to get people out of their cars and onto buses and trains. Here’s your chance to feel superior to Prius drivers (“I’m saving the environment better than you are”), but if that’s not incentive enough to kick the auto habit, the RTA is running a contest with actual prizes to sweeten the pot.
All you have to do to enter is post a comment on any one of the RTA’s social media sites, YouTube, Facebook or Twitter, through Friday, June 17, and mention how you dumped the pump. A post on each site counts as a separate entry, so that’s three chances to win (multiple posts on multiple sites will do you no good).
What are you playing for? A lifetime of free rides! Well, no, that would be awesome, but have you seen the RTA’s budget? Even old people have to pony up for fares now. Actual prizes are not too shabby though: an Amazon Kindle and two iPod Shuffles (which you’d best be warned not to display on public transit), gift cards and transit passes.
In truth, everyone’s a winner on Dump the Pump Day. Check out handy calculators that demonstrate fuel savings and reduced carbon emissions. But that Kindle sure would be nice.
