Residents of the Lincoln Square North area (Lawrence to Foster, Western to the River) have spotted an uptick in gang graffiti over the past weeks, particularly in the blocks surrounding Gross Park, 2708 W. Lawrence Ave.

The five-pointed crown commonly associated with the Latin Kings was sprayed on the Gross Park fieldhouse (the park is an old LK stronghold), a garage in an alley off the 4700 block of North California, an apartment building in the 4700 block of North Washtenaw and also reported on Washtenaw near Winnemac. Graffiti Blasters, which prioritizes removal of gang graffiti around parks and schools, promptly erased the symbols.

CAPS Sgt. Norman Kwong of the 20th Police District did not respond to our inquiry regarding a possible increase in Latin Kings activity in the neighborhood. The next CAPS meeting for Beat 2031, which covers the affected area, is set for July 31, 7 p.m., Anderson Pavilion, 2751 W. Winona.
