Local Rotary Donates Dictionaries to McPherson School Students

By Denise Burch | Wednesday, November 16, 2011

Lincoln Square, Chicago, November 15, 2011:  On Thursday, Nov. 17, the Chicago Lakeview Rotary Club will present dictionaries to each student in the third grade classes at James B. McPherson Elementary School. Scheduled to occur at 1:30 p.m. at the school, the presentation will follow the club’s regularly scheduled weekly meeting.

“Our club chose McPherson as we wanted to select neighborhood Chicago schools that were doing great things but were just under the radar as far as recognition for excellence,” member Mark Jak said. “The goal of this program is to assist all students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionary. “

The dictionaries are intended as gifts to the students personally to be used at school and at home for years to come.

“Educators see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn, so we were encouraged to give dictionaries to children in the third grade,” said Jak, long-time Lincoln Square/Ravenswood resident and Baird & Warner broker.

As part of its goals to foster relationships between community members and the school, Friends of McPherson School (FOMS) is proud to announce this generous donation.

“We are really seeing the community get behind the school,” said Bob Farster, FOMS president. “What’s great is the eye-opening that occurs when neighborhood folks come into the school. They can really see all the wonderful things that happen at McPherson. – from gifts like this one from Rotary to our amazing teachers making a difference every day.”

The Chicago Lakeview Rotary Club is comprised of local residents and business owners who meet each week over lunch to network, to discuss ongoing community projects, and to promote the Rotary mission of Service Above Self. The 30-member group recently led a medical mission to Peru, adopted two group homes for the developmentally disabled with Neumann Family Services, worked at The Common Pantry, served food with The Night Ministry, as well as supported a variety of other programs that are sponsored with either financial and/or volunteer resources. The group meets each Thursday and is always looking for members to join their effort. www.chicagolakeviewrotaryclub.org
