Ald. Ameya Pawar (47th) announced via a press release last night that he is backing the Lycee Francais de Chicago proposal for a new school building at 4544 N. Winchester Ave. with no changes to the school’s proposed design. Pawar’s release also announces that the school has dropped its request for Tax Increment Financing (TIF) money in the proposal the school is forwarding to the Chicago Plan Commission this week.

Last month, the school had notified the community that it was seeking an undisclosed amount for TIF funds to assist with site remediation.

In the public meeting held August 3 to review the school’s plans, community members expressed concern about traffic on the Damen and Wilson intersection, the school’s proposed setback on Wilson Ave., among other issues.

This morning Pawar would not indicate to Center Square Journal if he has discussed with Lycee Francais officials those aspects or any other specific elements of the school’s proposed plans. Instead, Pawar was confident that any necessary changes would be dealt with through the City’s standard review process through the Plan Commission and City Council Zoning Committee.

“The next step is they have to pass Plan Commission and then we have to have another community meeting before they begin construction phase,” said Pawar. “We’ve asked them to meet after it passes Plan Commission so we can tweak it if need be.”

The Chicago Plan Commission will take up the Lycee Francais proposal at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday in City Council Chambers. It is one of 26 items on the day’s agenda.
