Outgoing LSCs Could Determine Incoming Principals

Given the recent spate of principal retirements, scores of schools, including Lane Tech College Prep High School and Burley Elementary, will be looking for new leadership in the 2012-13 school year.

Local School Councils, which count hiring principals among their responsibilities, are already beginning the search process, even though LSC elections, which could dramatically alter the make-up of a council’s membership, are just a week away. In the way that an outgoing Congress can still enact laws between election and inauguration days, current LSCs remain firmly in charge until new councils are seated July 1.

For well-run schools, a sense of continuity is likely welcome. But for those communities hungering for a change, even a wholesale replacement of the existing LSC could leave them stuck with more of the same.
