A group calling themselves the 47th Ward Young Democrats will meet for drinks and a chance to chat with State Representative Ann Williams at the Save More Lounge, 4060 N. Lincoln Ave., on April 21 at 7 p.m.
Organized by early-thirty-somethings Mike Melander and Megan Fulara, the group is meant to be less of a political organization than a gathering point.
“We thought it would be a great way to get young people into politics. A great way to get new blood into the organization,” Fulara told Center Square Journal.
“We just want to meet more likeminded people. We’re both relatively new to this area and have Democratic tendencies.”
Although Fulara says she helped start the group for “altruistic” reasons, she also happens to be a staffer for 47th Ward powerhouse and Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan. State Rep. Ann Williams was also once a staffer for Atty. Gen. Madigan.
Fulara says the group was organized by just Melander and herself.
The organization does not currently include representatives from other leading Democrats in the 47th Ward, including the current Democratic Ward Committeeman, Eugene Schulter, the Political Director of the Cook County Democratic Party, Scott Cisek or the incoming mayor, Rahm Emanuel.
“We’re hoping that [Alderman-Elect] Ameya [Pawar] will attend,” said Fulara. “A lot of the other gentlemen are well-established and have been around for a long time. This is a way to get people involved who are intimidated by those resumes. A gentler way. We just want to go from there.”
