A quick round-up of recent local restaurant news:
City Provisions, 1818 W. Wilson Ave., is now serving brunch and Night Time Nosh. Grab some cinnamon French toast or bacon steaks with duck fat fries at Sunday brunch, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Night Time Nosh, served Tuesday through Saturday, 4-9 p.m., features charcuterie and a variety of cheese flights. Wash it all down with a glass of wine or beer. That’s right! City Provisions is no longer just selling alcohol, it’s now licensed to serve it.
The Red Lion, 4749 N. Rockwell Ave., recently introduced a kids’ menu, the “Penny Stinker”. Items include scaled-down versions of grown-up fare, with infinitely more adorable names. Chicken tenders become “The Brave Sir Robin”, a PB&J is “The Mad Hatter” and I’m personally dying to hear someone order “The Mrs. Tittlemouse,” a cheese and fruit plate. Just in time for the forthcoming Harry Potter flick, the Red Lion has also concocted its own version of the wizard brew, butter beer (cream soda with whipped cream). Homemade desserts, courtesy of an enterprising member of the kitchen staff, are now being offered as well. A recent evening featured a moist slice of chocolate Guinness cake topped with a dollop of cream cheese.
Costello’s wants you…to design your own sandwich. The sandwich joint, 4647 N. Lincoln Ave, is sponsoring the Great Sandwich Challenge, your chance to create and name your own sandwich from a list of Costello’s ingredients. Four finalists will be chosen from the pool of entries; customers will have the opportunity to purchase the sandwiches, and the concoction with the most sales will earn a place on Costello’s menu, plus a cool $100 for its inventor.
