Not that you need an excuse for a cupcake crawl, but this Thursday, November 10, is National Vanilla Cupcake Day. To get your sugar buzz on, follow our handy guide to neighborhood sweet spots.
Dinkel’s Bakery, 3329 N. Lincoln Ave., offers a buy one, get one free cupcake special on Tuesdays. (Plan a belated celebration to take advantage of the deal or, better yet, celebrate Vanilla Cupcake Day twice.) From there, it’s just a few short blocks to Bakin’ & Eggs, 3120 N. Lincoln Ave., which received raves for its pastries on Check, Please!
Sensational Bites, 3751 N. Southport Ave., understands that cupcakes are part cake, part frosting delivery mechanism. The bakery’s signature buttercream flower designs are almost too pretty to eat. Almost. You’ll have just enough time to lick the crumbs off your wrapper before hitting Southport Grocery & Cafe, 3552 N. Southport Ave., where the cupcakes are so popular, they turned them into pancakes. Hello, how did this not win the Nobel Prize for chemistry?
Now’s about the point in a cupcake crawl where you start to wish you’d worn an elastic waistband. Good thing we’re finishing up at Fritz Pastry, 1408 W. Diversey Ave., and Bleeding Heart Bakery, 1955 W. Belmont Ave., which are known for their vegan pastries (if Fritz is short on cupcakes, we don’t need to tell you to improvise with a macaron or doughnut). No animal products, no calories. At least that’s what I like to tell myself; feel free to borrow the delusion.
See you next month for National Pie Day, December 1, and National Cookie Day, December 4.
