Mariano’s Fresh Markets plans to add a new grocery store at Western Ave. and Roscoe street, the former home of a Dominick’s.
The building has been vacant since October, but Mariano’s cannot get in the space yet.
“We can’t get in until the previous lease [with Dominick's] expires,” said Vivian King, spokeswoman for Mariano’s Fresh Markets. “Until we get in, we can’t make any plans.”
King said that Dominick’s, a Mariano’s competitor, has a lease on the empty building until the end of March. She said they asked for access to the site, but the landlord said they can’t until the Dominick’s lease is finished.
Mariano’s is planning a total remodel of the space, and since they do not know the state of the building, King says her company will not be able to set an opening date until April at the earliest.
Known as Roundy’s Supermarkets in Milwaukee and Copps in Madison, Wisconsin, the new Western Ave. store will be similar to a pilot store in Arlington Heights, the first Mariano’s Fresh Market in the Chicago area. Mariano’s is also currently building in Lakeshore East near the Loop.
The Ravenswood Station development on Lawrence Ave. and Ravenswood Ave., announced last spring, is slated to include a Mariano’s Fresh Market as well, but according to King, “It’s too early to tell,” if a store will actually go there since they, “don’t have a lease yet.”
