Honda Tire Bandit(s) On the Loose

If you own a Honda, you might want to keep an eye on your tires, because Chicago detectives are investigating a string of Honda tire thefts. According to a community alert issued by Area Three detectives, the thefts are taking place during the evening, and the bandit (or bandits) are targeting Hondas parked on the street. Too bad there isn’t a club for tires that doesn’t look like a boot (and doesn’t cost hundreds of dollars).

Chicago detectives are also warning small-business owners about a series of break-ins that are taking place throughout Area Three, which includes parts of Lincoln Square and Lake View. The burglaries have taken place during the evening or early morning, and the burglars have gotten into the businesses either by smashing a window or prying open the front door, according to a community alert issued by Area 3 detectives. Detectives encourage small-business owners to not leave any money in registers and leave the empty registers open.

The Chicago Police Department encourages anyone with information about either the Honda Tire Bandit or the small-business burglaries to call Area Three detectives at (312) 744-8261.

This does not make a whole lot of sense. Tires are pretty well interchangeable between makes/models. There are no “Honda” tires. Seems like someone is stealing tires and they happened to hit some Hondas.

Yeah, I know what you mean, but I decided to stick with what they said. Here’s a direct quote from the community alert.

“The Chicago Police Department is currently investigating the theft of Honda tires off of Honda vehicles while the vehicle is parked on the street.”

They are targeting Honda wheels, not tires. Honda wheels have an incredibly high black market value and sell very quickly.

      Makes more sense.

hello!!! I bought my 2008 Honda Fit in Spring of 2008. December 2008 I got a call from my neighbor one Sunday morning asking what was wrong with my car. Ran outside thinking a plow truck had side swipped my car.. We had just had a bad snow storm. When I walked outside I found my car with NO tires on it. At that point did not know what to think. Called my local police department and they told me that I was the 12th caller that morning about this issue. Told me to have a nice day and call my insurance company. I did not know that Honda fit tires were so popular. Did not think a car like that would be popular. Why not another highend car.. why a Honda fit? Took my insurance one week to get someone out to look at the damage and have a tow truck come and get my car. Had to pay $3,500 out of pocket until my insurance company could reimburse me. Since they put the bricks in the middle of my car to take the tires off, they put a hole in my exhaust pipe costing me more than I should have paid. When I went down to honda they convinced me to put 4 wheel locks on each tire. Now knowing that there is a tool out there that will take it off makes me very nervous. But having 4 wheel locks on each tire will defiently slow down the thief. And it is almost the 1 year anniversary of when my tires were stolen off my car. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!
