Back in September, Mayor Emanuel announced plans to build four boathouses along the Chicago River, in a bid to create a backyard for the city as welcoming as its lakefront. On March 6, drawings of the proposed River Park boathouse will be unveiled at the River Park Fieldhouse, 5100 N. Francisco Ave., 6 p.m. The boathouse itself will be situated at Argyle and the river.

Architects Chris Lee and Jeanne Gang (a genuine genius according to the MacArthur Foundation) have been leading a group of architecture students at the Illinois Institute of Technology to design the boathouses. A member of this team will be on hand to talk about the plan.

Each boathouse will feature kayak rentals, storage and concessions. A second North Side boathouse is slated for Clark Park, 3400 N. Rockwell St.

There is no “genuine” in the design I saw March 6th. That said, I understand that there wasn’t much of a budget either. With the winter we had, plenty of contractors in need of the work, the simplicity of the design, it should have been built already!
