Decades from now, Chicagoans may look back on the summer of 2012 as the beginning of the Great Roscoe Village Gelato War.
The operators of Wicker Park’s Black Dog Gelato have confirmed their plans to open a second store at 1955 W. Belmont Ave., for years the home of Phillips “Butter Kist” Bakery and most recently Bleeding Heart Bakery.
The news follows by less than a month word that the local franchisee of Texas-based gelato chain Paciugo would be opening an outlet in May at the former Home Run Media offices at 2009 W. Roscoe St.
Black Dog Gelato is operated by former Scylla pastry chef Jessica Oloroso, who’s made a name for herself with unique products such as the Whiskey Gelato Bar (think of it as a grown-up Eskimo Pie) and flavors like Goat Cheese Cashew Caramel and Mexican Hot Chocolate. The larger space on Belmont will have additional indoor seating and will allow Black Dog Gelato to increase production. The new location will also offer plated desserts such as a Hawaiian barbeque sundae with roasted pineapple and barbeque sauce.
A manager at Black Dog said that the Belmont location is expected to open in May, and that operators plan to hire an unknown number of employees to staff the new store as soon as they figure out their needs.
