Politicians tend to hold all kinds of community meetings on all kinds of topics. Some of them are useful, others are merely self-promotion vehicles. But Thursday evening State Sen. Heather Steans and State Rep. Greg Harris are planning a doozy that should be chock-full of terrible state budget facts.
The legislators, whose districts represent the north and eastern parts of the Center Square Journal coverage area, are hosting a Budget Town Hall Meeting at St. Augustine College (1333 W. Argyle) on Thursday, Aug. 19, from 7 – 9 p.m.
Of course, the event will include speeches from our elected officials, but be sure to stay for the real meat of the meeting: presentations from Lawrence Msall of the Civic Federation and Ralph Martire from the Center for Tax and Budget Accountability.
Msall and Martire are Illinois’ chief “good government” crusaders. Msall is known for his consistent anti-waste, anti-tax positions, while Martire has been an ongoing advocate for government pension and education funding reform.
Given the state of the economy, you can be sure there will be little good news at this forum, but at least you’ll be well-informed.
