Renovation planning for Filbert Playlot Park, 1822 W. Larchmont Ave., has kicked into overdrive: The Chicago Park District will approve a final design this summer and has slated the park for construction this fall, says park supporter Emily Kligensmith.
Kligensmith, president of Friends of Filbert Playlot Park, says Park District administrators have commissioned landscape architects at the Hitchcock Design Group to get plans to the 50 percent completion mark within two weeks. A community meeting to review the plans has
tentativelybeen scheduled for 6:00 p.m. May 8 in the Chase Park field house, 4701 N. Ashland Ave. [Updated 5/1 8:50 a.m.]
Kligensmith was surprised by the accelerated construction schedule when she called to check in on progress with the Park District. The Park District had not informed architects of the existence of the friends of park group, but because Kligensmith is an exterior lighting designer, she knew to contact Hitchcock to fill them in on the friends of group’s previous planning.
“They didn’t know that we had a 50 percent matching grant for the playset, which requires a specific design,” says Kligensmith. “I’m glad I found out all this when I did. If I’d found out a week later, we’d be too late to affect the design.”
Kligensmith says the Park District told her construction bidding will begin in June/July and construction is slated to begin in late fall.
With construction fast approaching, Friends of Filbert needs to raise $25,000 in the next few months. A Cinco de Mayo fundraiser is scheduled for Sunday, May 6, at Cafe 28. RSVP to email@example.com.
