Fast Food (and Drink)

Square Kegs is hosting an afternoon of food and craft beer pairings.

A quick take on the local restaurant scene.

The Square Kegs Home Brew Club is hosting “Pairings in the Plaza” on Saturday, July 16, 2:00-6:00 p.m. Local restaurants and breweries will join forces in Giddings Plaza, sampling food and beers and offering advice on how to play matchmaker between the two. Participants include Bistro Campagne, Fountainhead, The Grafton, Homage Street Food, LM, Pizza D.O.C., Prix Fixe, Provenance Food & Wine, 5 Rabbit, Finch Beer Co. and Metropolitan Brewing. Here’s the deets about tickets: you’ll need one; must be 21 years or older to purchase; cost is $20 by July 8, $30 after or $35 day of event if available.

Here’s something to Yelp about: It’s time for Yelp Eats!, July 11-17, that magical week when chosen restaurants all but give away food at half price. Why? Because they like you and your positive reviews. Among those judged the “Yelpiest” (definition TBD): Trattoria Trullo, 4767 N. Lincoln Ave., and Isla Pilipina, 2501 W. Lawrence Ave. Trattoria Trullo’s discounted items include bruschetta, pan-seared whitefish and tiramisu. Isla’s offerings include a two-piece vegetable eggroll appetizer, Sizzling Sisig (diced pork belly and ear–yelp!), and a dessert featuring fried plantain, caramel and ice cream.

The French think they invented culture but really all they do is ride our coattails. First they copy our revolution, then they celebrate their own independence day. But who cares, since it’s another excuse to eat and drink. As part of a very busy week, Bistro Campagne, 4518 N. Lincoln Ave., gets in the spirit of Bastille Day, July 14, with a $36 four-course prix fixe dinner and drinks special. Vive la France!
