I remember whipping up Mother’s Day breakfast when I was little. Our signature recipe came from my sister’s junior cookbook and consisted of dipping packaged biscuit dough in melted butter, coating with cinnamon sugar and baking into twists. Mom deserved an Oscar for treating this like haute cuisine.

With an assist from Dinkel’s Bakery, kids today can turn out far tastier fare.

Fathers take note: The bakery (3329 N. Lincoln) is offering a series of cake decorating workshops for youngsters. Dinkel’s provides a 6-inch cake and decorating supplies, kids provide the creativity. At the end, they bring home a masterpiece worthy of the woman who spent 43 hours in labor.

The workshop schedule is as follows:

  • May 5 – 2 to 7 p.m.
  • May 6 – 2 to 7 p.m.
  • May 7 – 1:15 to 5 p.m.

Reservations are required. Call 773.281.7300 and provide your child’s name, age and choice of yellow or chocolate cake. The cost is $9.99.

Me, I’m off to buy some biscuit dough.
