Detailed Maps: Where Roscoe Village, South & West Lakeview Would End Up On New Ward Maps

By Mike Fourcher | Sunday, December 18, 2011

A portion of the proposed Latino Caucus map.

Last Friday the Chicago City Council Latino Caucus and the Black Caucus introduced new ward maps that would create new wards on the north side. Both maps would move the 32nd Ward, home of Ald. Scott Waguespack, south of Diversey Ave. and move a South Side alderman north to cover Logan Square, Roscoe Village, and West and South Lakeview.

The proposed new boundaries have been created to satisfy substantial population shifts from the 2010 census. Neither map can be approved by the City Council without 41 aldermanic votes. 16 Alderman, including Scott Waguespack (32nd), have endorsed the Latino Caucus map. 32 Aldermen, including Tom Tunney (44th) and Ameya Pawar (47th), have already endorsed the Black Caucus map.

Roscoe View Journal has produced detailed maps showing the proposed boundaries of the proposed Latino Caucus and Black Caucus maps. The maps can be found below, while the original ordinances for the ward boundaries can be found below that.

Is there a way to easier understand the color coding or am I missing something?

    • Anonymous

The colors don’t mean anything. They’re just there to help show the boundaries.

Thank you so much for doing this!!! Your maps have helped me to better understand the new redistricting and where my neighborhood Roscoe Village will be. It seems either we’re the Red-headed stepchild nobody wants or that were important enough to get a new ward. Although I’m currently very happy with my current Alderman Scott.

Yet some more versions of the ward remaps. Good presentation. Ald. Scott Waguespack from the 32nd Ward has to reduce the wards population by 9,800 residents.  Joe Lake, Chicago

Moving a black Alderman to the North side seems like a political move by Chairman Dick Mell to have his son run for Cochran’s job.
its just another way to seal the future of the Mell family’s strangle-hold on power.

Why is no one covering this?

We are! As for the part about Mell’s son, that’s uncorroborated. However, his daughter, State Rep. Deb Mell, has expressed public interest in taking over for him when he retires.

Am I reading this correctly?  The 20th ward will take over part of the northside?  Does that mean that alderman Willie Cochran will move  north?  Will his office stay at 63rd and Cottage Grove?  Does anyone else think this is crazy???

Looks like we’ll be outside the 47th ward if the Black Caucus remap is approved.  Disappointing since we’ve lived in the 47th ward for many, many years and helped elect the current alderman.  If they just moved it one block North to Argyle we’d still be in the ward. We live on Damen right next door to a few nice businesses such Over Easy & Dolce Casa Cafe and are across the street from Ravenswood Evangelical Church. It would also be a shame if Winnemac park wasn’t in the ward as well.

I feel your pain, wishing the 47th Ward boundary would go to Foster.  Living off Carmen, we’d be dumped into O’Connor’s ward.  For my first 5 years in the neighborhood, he was my alderman.  Next to nothing gets done.  Sucking up to the Mayor is his full-time job.

You should create the maps so that they have similar colors, i.e. Ward 46 should be pink in both maps, instead of yellow in one and greenish in the other.
