Last night’s shooting at the corner of Damen and Addison was very likely gang affiliated, according to the Chicago Police Department.
According to a police spokesman, the victim, a 20 year-old hispanic male was exiting Mimi’s Mart at 3601 N. Damen Ave. and heading north when he was approached by a black sedan with a number of passengers. The victim shouted out, the passengers shouted “something gang affiliated,” according to the police, and then in course of fleeing the vehicle the victim was shot in the arm.
The victim was taken Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center and listed in good condition at publication.
The police spokesman would not reveal the gangs suspected of the shooting.
Ald. Ameya Pawar (47th) says he expressed concern to 19th District Comm. John Kenny this morning, but did not see the shooting as part of a trend.
“It certainly isn’t the usual sort of thing,” said Pawar. “We’re looking for an increased police presence in the area. We met with Comm. Kenny last Friday about increased graffiti in the ward. We provided them with maps of the graffitti in the ward and asked for increased presence [in those areas].”
“From what I understand this is an isolated incident and not a trend. We’re going to ask the police to step up patrols in problem areas.
“We’re asking people to organize block clubs, its not the kind of thing to stop these isolated incidents. Any time you have organized activity in a community, gangbangers stay away,” said Pawar.
