A coyote was spotted at the intersection of Damen and Grace Avenues at around 5:30 pm this evening. It headed east on Grace and then ducked into an alley, says Vanessa Herman, who sighted the animal.

“I called 911, and I said I apologize that this is not an emergency but there’s a coyote on the street and I think you ought to know about it,” said Herman.

Coyotes have been moving back into the city in recent years. Cook County Animal Control has collared and is tracking sixty coyotes, and many more are suspected to be in the city. About the size of a a medium-size domestic dog, the animals are very territorial and tend to eat rodents, say scientists.

About 3 weeks ago, at about 5:45am, I observed a coyote walking West on Grace near Ravenswood.  When it reached the railroad tracks, it climbed the embankment up onto the tracks.  I was walking my small dog at the time, and he walked right past us.  It had a plastic tag on it.
