Michael Stokes, real estate agent, Lincoln Square resident and stay at home dad to two, can now add business owner to his resume. Mike is the owner and creator of the upcoming Pickle’s Playroom at 2315 W. Lawrence.
This “Sip, Clip and Play Cafe” will be a place that is “comfortable, has great service and is a safe neighborhood spot” for parents and kids. The facility will house a 1500-square-foot playroom along with a cafe and hair salon for kids. Special event and birthday party rentals of the space will also be available.
All about fun, the playroom will include an area for crawlers, walkers, toddlers and older children. For crawlers there will be a space with movable foam furniture for parents to sit on and arrange any way they wish. There will also be an area for nursing moms. New walkers and toddlers can look forward to an area of fun crawling tubes, small slides and an interactive wall. For older kids there will be a playhouse, market area, activity area and arts and crafts section. Parents will be able to sit with their children in the playroom or in the cafe where they can monitor their kids over a small 3-foot wall.
Pickle’s Playroom will also have the honor of being the first business to operate under the new Children’s Activity Facility License. Co-sponsored by Alderman Gene Schulter, the new business license goes into effect on October 7. Under the new license for child-focused facilities, the city parking requirement is reduced and background checks of owners and officers of such businesses are required.
When asked about his view on the new license Mr. Stokes was very enthusiastic. He said that it is the first time that a business dealing with children has been required to have background checks. “It is a great safety measure to have in place.” Safety is a main focus for the playroom, from foam flooring for crawling to eco-friendly cleaners.
Pickle’s Playroom is in the licensing process, awaiting final approval from the proper city departments. Stokes hopes to do heavy construction in October and hold a grand opening by December.
