Since Tuesday, Sprinkler Fitters Local 281 has been conducting a regional strike against all contractors from the National Fire Sprinkler Association, shutting down construction sites across Chicago, including the Old Town School of Folk Music expansion project at 4544 N. Lincoln Ave.

No workers have crossed the picket line since Tuesday’s job action began and no work has been conducted, according to strikers at the site.

Update: This afternoon a representative from the Sprinkler Fitters said that the contractors and the union, “have not met since negotiations broke down on Tuesday.”

Now that the strike has begun, maybe the Sprinks can get a Seniority/Class based Hiring Hall.  This would stop officers of 281 from allowing contractors to use employment opportunity information as a way to provide special benefits to some members of 281 not provided to all.  Sad but true! There are two other collective bargaining agreements out there signed between 281 and the City of Chicago.
Those contracts provide for seniority rules when it come to layoff and recall.  How about envoking “Favoured Nations”?  If it is good to some members of 281…let it be good to all!   http://mfnmetoo.blogspot.com/

Wow — I noticed things seemed a little quieter around there, but I had no idea they were on strike. Hope they can reach an agreement and get back to work soon…can’t wait for the new OTS location to open!
