Marching in the Von Steuben Day Parade

A bevy of politicians marched in Saturday's Von Steuben Day Parade down Lincoln Avenue, including (l to r) Ald. Eugene Schulter (47th) (obscured at far left) mayoral hopeful Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart, ABC7's Janet Davies, Mayor Richard M. Daley, and, second from right, mayoral hopeful Ald. Bob Fioretti (2nd). Photo by Teresa Fourcher.

The rain stopped and the crowds came out for the annual Von Steuben Day Parade down Lincoln Avenue, starting at Damen and Irving Park Road and moving north to Western Avenue and Leland Street. As was expected, the parade attracted plenty of men in lederhosen, high school marching bands, and floats sponsored by German beer. But Mayor Richard M. Daley’s recent announcement brought out a few non-neighborhood politicians and a few more cheers for him than normal. This year’s parade was also better than usual due to the participation of the Center Square Journal team, including not just Center Square Journal staff but also many neighborhood readers. So, no one knows the guy in the front row of the parade who may actually be of German descent?
