March With CSJ In The Von Stueben Day Parade!

By Mike Fourcher | Thursday, September 8, 2011

This weekend the 91st annual German-American Fest will roll into Lincoln Square on Friday at 6:00 p.m. But what we’re really excited about is Center Square’s only neighborhood parade: The Von Steuben Day Parade up Lincoln Avenue on 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Come march with the CSJ team and get a free CSJ shirt! Kids are especially invited!

The parade starts at the intersection of Lincoln, Damen, and Irving Park Road and progresses about a mile north to Western Avenue where it wraps up at the German-American Festival in Lincoln Square. This year’s parade takes a slightly different route, heading west on Wilson Ave., rather than the traditional Eastwood Ave. bend.

Expect lots of men in lederhosen, women in dirndls and our favorite, senior citizens in funny hats claiming to be some kind of “prince and his court”.

If you haven’t gone to the parade in the past, it’s a low-key, family-friendly affair with lots of floats for local German-American groups, classic cars, high school marching bands, and, lotsof lederhosen.

The Center Square Journal team will be lining up at about 1:45 p.m. near Lincoln, Irving Park and Damen. We’ll be the ones in the green and white t-shirts!

The ”senior citizens in funny hats claiming to be some kind of “prince and his court” are actually members of Chicago’s Niedersachsen Club, just one of the over 30 Germanic clubs taking part in this festival.

And we love them for it.

If I’ve gotten the vibe down right by talking to members of the Court in years past, the Prince and his Court don’t take their position too seriously. And that’s the spirit I meant to take. Sorry if I offended you.
