In case you haven’t heard, it’s going to be fry-an-egg-on-the-sidewalk hot today. Here at RVJ headquarters, we’re spritzing ourselves with squirt guns, stocking up on popsicles and planning a mid-day escape to the movies, even if it means watching Abe Lincoln hunt vampires.
For those of you taking the more traditional route of holing up in air conditioning, we have a few tips for keeping cool without losing your shirt to ComEd.
- Close the drapes/blinds on the sunny side of your house.
- Avoid generating heat inside your home. Cook on your outdoor grill or use a crockpot and the microwave oven. Use the “air dry” setting on your dishwasher.
- Using ceiling fans in tandem with your a/c will allow you to set the a/c higher and save money.
- Turn off lights when not in use. Lights produce heat, which makes your air conditioning system work harder (and cost more). Same for your computer and other home office equipment.
Stay hydrated, check on elderly neighbors or family members and remember, only six more months til January.
