Earlier this month Roscoe Village’s Audubon Elementary School, 3500 N. Hoyne Ave., was awarded the U.S. Department of Education’s prestigious Blue Ribbon Award. One of only two schools in the Chicago area selected to receive the award, Audubon and the second school, North Side College Prep, 5501 N. Kedzie Ave., will be honored at a ceremony later this year in Washington D.C. along with the 303 other schools across the nation awarded the honor this year.
The Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle, and high schools that are either high performing or have improved student achievement to high levels, especially among disadvantaged students. The program is part of a larger Department of Education effort to identify and disseminate knowledge about best school leadership and teaching practices. Each year since 1982, the U.S. Department of Education has sought out schools where students attain and maintain high academic goals, including those that beat the odds.
“I think the success of the school is due to our commitment to meeting the needs of all, students regardless of their ability,” said Principal John Price. “[Our] teachers are incredibly dedicated to ensuring that all students make academic growth. Learning new strategies for differentiating curriculum and creating inclusive and supportive classes are how we spend our professional time.”
Friends of Audubon President Rachael Gilboy agreed. “Winning the Blue Ribbon Award not only recognizes Audubon’s record of superior achievement, but also serves to recognize the dedication and hard work of its parents and broader community. It is the combination of parental and communal support, terrific administration, and committed teaching staff that has propelled our neighborhood school to reach a sustained level of academic excellence.”
Price continued to praise the community, “The level of parent support for the school, and the impact of this support cannot be overstated. The entire community has been able to come together to support the students of Audubon, and the results have been incredible.”
Audubon Elementary School will hold a Blue Ribbon celebration at the school on Thursday, November 17th.
