The developers of Lake View Athletic Club and Lincoln Park Athletic Club plan to begin construction “within 30 days” of a new Lincoln Square Athletic Club in the old Northern Home Furnishings space, 4662 North Lincoln Avenue.
The building has been vacant since the store closed last spring.
Developers Pat Cunningham of Chicago Athletic Clubs (CAC) and Larry Weiner of Marc Realty, have been, “working on licences and permits for the last year,” according to Weiner. Marc Realty will be the property owner while CAC will operate and own the gym, which is expected to open, “in the second or third quarter of 2010,” says Weiner.
Cunningham and Weiner have partnered on four previous gym, Lake View, Lincoln Park, Evanston and West Loop Athletic Clubs. The facilities are typically high-end with more expensive membership fees and located in renovated historic buildings. Lake View Athletic Club is in the old Jane Addams Hull House, 3212 N. Broadway, and Lincoln Park Athletic Club is in the old Lincoln Turners Gymnasium, 1019 W. Diversey. “We like to renovate older buildings,” says Weiner.
Weiner and Cunningham have been planning on a Lincoln Square gym for some time now. “Customer surveys at the gyms show people wanted a place in Lincoln Square, said Weiner. Marc Realty closed on the property, “more than a year ago,” before Northern Home Furnishings closed for business.
