Well that was fast. In the current economy, Chicagoans have become accustomed to “coming soon” signs that stretch the limits of the definition of “soon.” But Athleta clearly meant business, throwing open the doors to its new location at 3415 N. Southport Ave. at 9 a.m. on April 4, barely two months after RVJ reported the retailer’s intent to plant roots in Chicago.
In addition to athletic apparel for women, Athleta, a division of Gap Inc., will offer free fitness classes, free alterations in-store and kiosks that link directly to the company’s website for additional products and sizes.
Running counter to current trends, Athleta, primarily an online and catalog business, is moving into the brick-and-mortar field in a big way. The Southport store is the company’s second to open this year and Athleta plans to
add 50 more have a total of 50 in the U.S. by 2013. Women of Southport, you have in your wallets the power to make or break an entire corporate strategy.
