Beginning Feb. 29, crews from the Department of Water will begin replacing a 1,300-foot stretch of 120-year-old pipe running under Melrose Street between Racine and Southport. Construction is expected to last through April 10, with the road closed to through traffic for the duration. Belmont and School are recommended as alternate routes.
The process of excavating the old pipe and installing the new will take approximately two and a half months. As buildings are connected to the new water main, residents will experience an interruption in their water service for two to five hours; people should receive 48 hours notice prior to any shut-off. Street resurfacing and parkway restoration will last another two to three weeks.
