Nothing softens the blow of “back to school” like a new box of crayons (with built-in sharpener) and some glue paste, but for many neighborhood students, the cost of these items puts a strain on the family budget. Which is why the 47th Ward Office is partnering with Common Pantry and Ravenswood Community Services to collect and distribute supplies to area families in need.
To donate to the drive, simply drop off items at the 47th Ward Office, 4243 N. Lincoln Ave., between now and Aug. 31. Requested supplies include: backpacks, glue sticks and tape, colored pencils and crayons, erasers and rulers, spiral notebooks, folders, loose-leaf paper, pencil boxes and pouches, pencil sharpeners and scissors, staplers, USB drives, hand sanitizer and tissues, markers and highlighters, three-ring binders, index cards, and scientific and pocket calculators.
If you would like to organize a supply drive of your own or make a monetary donation, contact Dara Salk at 773.549.2735 or email@example.com.
Chicago Public Schools is also participating in a Groupon promotion to distribute school supply kits to low-income students. The deal, which costs $11 or $18, runs through Aug. 7.
