Creating a dramatic ending for an important meeting of the 47th Ward Democratic organization, the organization President, William Helm, was arrested Saturday morning on charges of misdemeanor battery, related to an alleged assault on February 22, Election Night.
Outgoing Alderman Eugene Schulter (47th) had just wrapped up a meeting at the ward political office, 4239 N. Lincoln Ave., when police arrived. Schulter told organization precinct captains that he plans to continue as Democratic Ward Committeeman.
At 10:25 a.m., Chicago Police Officers from the 19th District Tactical Unit arrived. Police arrested and handcuffed Helm, and he was transported to the 19th District station for processing.
According to a signed complaint from the victim completed on February 24 at Swedish Covenant Hospital, the victim was at at a tavern on 4300 N. Western Ave. when Helm and two other men allegedly attacked him. According to the complaint, Helm allegedly struck the victim on the left side of his face with a closed fist.
One person who attended the party confirms that it was at losing 47th Ward Aldermanic candidate Tom O’Donnell’s election night party at the Celtic Crown, 4301 N. Western Ave.
The other two attackers were not named in the victim’s complaint.
The Chicago Police Department could not confirm at the time of publication if Helm was still in custody or had been released on bond.
