47th Ward Candidates’ Forum Set

By Mike Fourcher | Monday, January 3, 2011

Incumbent Ald. Eugene Schulter and his four opponents will have an opportunity to explain why they will be the best 47th Ward alderman for the next four years.

The Center Square Journal, in conjunction with Inside Publications, is conducting a 47th Ward Candidates forum on Wednesday, January 26, 6:00 pm at the DANK Haus Skyline Lounge, 4740 N. Western Ave.  The forum will be moderated by Early And Often reporter and former Center Square Journal editor, Hunter Clauss.

All five candidates currently on the ballot have been invited, including incumbent Ald. Eugene Schulter, Matt Reichel, Ameya Pawar, Tom O’Donnell and Tom Jacks.

Audience members will be able to ask questions of their own by submitting questions to the moderator.

Does anyone think that Schulter is going to lose? Or are these people just getting there name out there for next election when he probably will not run?

Schulter is vulnerable. His potent operation only got Claypool 53% of the vote. Now it looks like Berrios is coming after Gene for backing Claypool. Precinct captains in Schulter’s organization would like to see Schulter go so they’re not forced to ring doorbells. With Bill Helm gone from the Forest Preserve, there are no more jobs for Gene to dole out.

Gene is in real big trouble. How many other long time incumbets with a sizable warchest have this many people running against them?

I’ve also heard that Rahm would like to see Gene lose or bow out. Rahm needs a big turnout in all the north side wards. With Gene in the race, people may not turn out. The general feeling is that Gene rubs people the wrong way.

Really? I am not 100% on my 47 politics, yet — but i thought Gene was a big reason why Rahm was elected previously? I find it hard to believe that just because people wont vote for their alderman, they will pass on the mayor.

Watching some of Ameyas stuff — I am not impressed yet. IMO 47 does not need ‘change’…its not 46/uptown….47 is on a path of growth and sustainability, i hope they build more on that.

          Hi Steve -
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about my campaign. I would like to hear your ideas and incorporate them into my campaign platform. This is a participatory campaign and I want to make sure it reflects what the community wants. To that end, every policy prescription or idea is malleable. I am also going to create a ward council. This council would be a hyper-local decision making body which would mirror the City Council at the ward level. Residents and business owners will have voice ,the ability to vote on issues like zoning, parking, menu dollar allocation and TIFs AND the power to hold me accountable.

Please email me at info@renewchicago.com if you have any ideas, suggestions or criticisms. I am also open to having coffee.

I am interested to see what these young candidates have to say.

Is this still valid? I noticed that Ameya Pawar plans on being at a different event with his contemporaries *one hour later*.

Maybe everyone will hustle from one event to the next?

As a matter of fact, no, it isn’t. And it’s funny you bring it up right now while I’m drafting our announcement.

Due to that scheduling conflict, we’ve decided, along with Inside Publications, to hold a forum Feb. 15. Mick Dumke will moderate.

So look for that announcement soon!
