You may have noticed holiday decorations have not yet been installed on Lincoln Avenue and Irving Park Road light poles. We want to assure you there is no need to worry because they will be going up next week just the same as years past. Our installation of the new flag pole in Northenter Town Square in November was an unexpected expense and used up the 2012 community beautification budget line. As many of you know, the Northcenter Chamber has declined delegate agency grant funding from the city in 2013, so we need to be that much more careful about our financial decisions. Since the decorations are such an important part of the holiday season we needed just a little extra time to find the money and be sure we could afford it.
Some people are surprised to learn that the Northcenter Chamber of Commerce provides the decorations to the community and not Special Service Area #38 that we manage. The mission of our SSA is clean and green and does not include holiday decorations. By keeping to the SSA’s core services like landscaping, snow removal and litter pick-up, we are able to keep the property tax assessment just a little lower for the owners within the district.
The decoration donation underscores the Chamber’s dedication to making Northcenter a great place to live, work and play. In fact, by the end of 2012 we will have contributed over $60,000 in cash and services back to the community through our philanthropy program, the Ribfest Volunteer Grants, and the senior luncheon with Alderman Pawar on December 21.
We hope you enjoy the decorations this year as you visit the businesses along Northcenter’s main corridors. We wish you happy holidays and remember: Shop Local. Shop Northcenter.
